tv Weekly Democratic Address CSPAN February 12, 2017 4:48am-4:54am EST
impossible for companies to compete. every hour of every day, my administration is focused on creating jobs for our people. good jobs. more jobs, better jobs, higher paying jobs. that is our mission. this way, i also met with sheriffs and police chiefs from across the country. that we wouldhem stand with the incredible men and women of law enforcement and so, too, will our great new attorney general jeff sessions. my administration is committed to your security, which is why we will continue to fight to take all necessary and legal action to keep terrorists, radical and dangerous extremists from ever entering our country. we will not allow our generous system of immigration to be turned against us as a tool for terrorism and truly bad people. we must take firm steps today to ensure that we are safe tomorrow.
we will defend our country, protect our constitution, and deliver real prosperity for our people. dodd bless you. god bus america. have a great week. >> the past few weeks have been perhaps the most significant test of our lifetime. a test of our values. a test of who we want to be as a people. and a test of our will. in attacking our constitution, the fundamental tenets of our democracy and who we are as a people, president trump has dismissed everything we just -- every thing we stand for, everything our ancestors fall for. in the face of uncertainty and anger, we have seen a new front emerge. people who are united behind our principles, can everything that is great in this country. perhaps most importantly, united behind each other. united because we all know that we are -- we are a stronger country because of immigrants,
united because we know this country has long prided itself in welcoming the stranger. i'm from queens, new york, a community in the statute -- in the shadow of the statue of liberty, and the community built by immigrants. as aproud to represent it son of immigrants. when my mother and grandparents can you from ireland, i doubt they ever dreamed that someday their son and grandson would have the honor of walking the halls of congress. like today's immigrant family, they wanted me to have every opportunity possible. immigrants are some of the bravest people i know because they choose to leave behind everything and face the unknown. they leave behind their neighborhoods, their schools, their churches, their synagogues come of their mosques. they leave behind their homes. they do it all because they seek the promise that the united states offers them. the promise of opportunity. by whatever means our ancestors came here, they give us a lasting legacy that we can all
be proud of. we must uphold it. there's been a lot of talk lately about what is america and what is american. what is american is people welcoming refugees and families at arrival gates. it is lawyers upholding the constitution from an airport floor and a laptop. it is people discovering the need for civic engagement. it is children learning that no matter who you are or where you came from or what you believe, you are welcome here. for all this bluster, president trump has underestimated the strength and the will of the american people. the actions hes has taken have made our country less safe and have hurt our standing in the world. but they are also not a reflection of who we are as a country. i promise you, we will fight back.
we will resist. we will resist on behalf of what is american. we will resist on behalf of the immigrants who came here in the past and who will come here in the future. my fellow americans, this is not a political fight, this is a fight for our future. this is about our democracy. this is about our country. this is about our people. this is about making our voices heard. let me tell you, it is working. i know this is a fight we will win. thank you. god bless america. >> tonight, on cue and day -- > but in all these years, i've never seen a case, the snowden case, went so
uncritically. acceptedts have information from a single source, edward snowden, who is in moscow under the control of the russian government. >> edward jay epstein and his book. >> he did enormous damage. i don't even know if his supporters say he did know damage. they say he did under enormous good. that's their view. and maybe he did some good, because he started a national conversation and he opened up a subject of interest. think trump is certainly right is that this man has not faced justice and he deserves to face justice, whatever we decide it. >> tonight at 8:00 eastern on c-span's q&a. >> now we hear from a new member of congress.
